About Carl Taylor, Esq.

Carl’s Credentials

Throughout his fifteen years of practice, Carl has developed the type of varied legal experience as befitting a family law practice, one of the broadest areas of law.

Carl has worked at Central New Jersey law firms both large and small, including previously working as a named partner at the firm of Cooper, Cottell, and Taylor, located in Somerville. His past experience also includes serving as Deputy County Counsel for Somerset County, as Township Attorney for East Amwell Township, and as municipal prosecutor for a dozen towns, including Bridgewater Township, Flemington Township, Raritan Borough, and Bedminster Township. Carl also previously worked in litigation defense for a major insurance carrier. As an entrepreneurially minded business owner himself, Carl understands what is on the line when working with business owners, who often have more complex divorce matters. Regardless of whether the case is a contested or uncontested divorce, a prenuptial agreement, a domestic violence trial, or a custody dispute, Carl puts to use his extensive litigation experience while remaining settlement-minded and efficiency focused.

Carl’s legal career started as a Somerset County law clerk in the Superior Court Family Division to the Honorable Anthony F. Picheca Jr., J.S.C. (ret.) in 2009-2010, and he has practiced divorce and family law throughout Central New Jersey since that time, having successfully represented hundreds of family law clients and counting. A trained family law mediator, Carl has also served as a divorce Early Settlement Panelist for Somerset County and currently serves as an Alternate Early Settlement Panelist for Hunterdon County. Active within his profession, Carl is a former Trustee of the Somerset County Bar Association and the Somerset County Bar Foundation, is a former co-chair of the Somerset County Young Lawyer’s Division, and has also served on the JPAC Judicial Selection Committee for Hunterdon County. Carl is a member of the Burlington County Bar Association and the New Jersey State Bar Association.

As the author of the books Happily EVEN After: the Guide to Divorce in New Jersey and Building a Matrimonial Practice, Carl has also been published numerous times both nationally and statewide on the subject of family law, including multiple times in the New Jersey Law Journal, where he has also been quoted on the subject of palimony. An outside-the-box thinker, Carl’s article in the special technology issue of the nationally published Family Lawyer Magazine titled Divorce in the Age of Bitcoin was the first national article on the subject of divorce and cryptocurrencies written for an audience of other family law attorneys. He has also been nationally published on the subject of utilizing civil litigation techniques in the matrimonial law setting.

With extensive civil litigation experience to draw from, Carl has previously represented numerous clients in business litigation throughout the state of New Jersey. These experiences guide Carl’s emphasis on building a divorce practice catering to the specific needs of business owners and fellow entrepreneurs.

Carl’s experience includes successful representation in New Jersey’s State, Federal, and Appellate courts. Carl has also previously served as legal counsel to the Somerset County Agriculture Development Board, the Somerset County Construction Board of appeals, and to various New Jersey school boards.

Such varied experience provides Carl with the instincts, breadth of knowledge, and skillset to effectively fight for the rights of his clients: specifically, to protect both their business and personal interests, as well as the bests interests of their children.

A graduate of Rutgers School of Law, Carl resides in Central New Jersey with his wife, two daughters, and an overzealous rough collie/firm mascot. Aside from his books on New Jersey divorce law, Carl is also a published fiction author with many credits, including a professional short story sale to the Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction. When he is not practicing law, writing, or spending time with his family, he enjoys the outdoors and collaborating with other business owners and creatives.

Carl’s Legal Philosophy

Carl founded his firm with a specific mission: to assist local families, and particularly local business owners in navigating the complexities of divorce and family law.

Carl has successfully served numerous clients seeking reliable legal representation in such matters. Tough, but never aggressive for its own sake, Carl considers the cost of legal fees in the analysis of every matter and in counseling his clients toward favorable outcomes. He often counsels clients to think of their divorce itself as a sort of business transaction, so that emotions do not cloud a proper analysis of strategy. He reminds his clients that while they are fighting for a larger portion of the marital “pie,” that same pie is shrinking all the time due to legal fees, expert fees, and court costs, not to mention the time lost and emotional toll of scorched-earth litigation.

A hallmark of Carl’s representation is regular communication with clients and providing regular status updates. Carl endeavors to return all client calls within twenty-four hours, and often far sooner. Carl believes strong communication is one of the keys to obtaining a favorable outcome.
